G T Yay!

So... it's here... GTA4... do I even need say how good it is?

A quick look at my friends list says it all really... the number of people playing it last night was quite impressive.

I have only clocked up a few hours so far so I'll reserve my final comments for another day but what I will say is... attention to detail!

It's quite incredible... and it's some of the smallest things like the fact that one character you meet (and give a lift to) likes to smoke in the car. No big deal but if you've got any broken windows, the smoke gently drifts out of those windows. It's a million little things and they all make a difference.

So... if you don't see any posts for a while, you know where I am ;)

Hanging around with time to kill...

I'm afraid I've been a little lax in my blogging duties of late. Partly down to the fact that work has been insanely busy (and my work ISP has got really nasty over filtering stuff, including blogger and any 'safe' means to bypass their filters) but mostly due to laziness :P

That said, I have managed to get a fair amount of gaming in. Everquest 2 has been quite high on the list, as has Eve, but the last week or so has very much been an Assassin's Creed week!

Can I just start by saying... Well done Ubisoft! If you're wondering why, then you've obviously not played it yet.

To me it is quite an incredible achievement, not for the stunning graphics, nor the amazing animation but more for the fact that it's a new IP... something significantly different from anything else out there.

That's not to say it's perfect but I do think that some of the reviews have been overly critical. Yes, the missions can get a little repetitive... but only if you follow the same formula for completing them. Take your time, wander about a bit, do the side missions as you encounter them, look for lone guards to take out smug in the knowledge that once you've slipped into the crowd no-one will ever know it was you.

My only real complaint, and it's one that has been mentioned by a number of people, is the ending. While I won't spoil it for anyone else, it was a little... empty... and quite clearly setting them up for the sequel. But then I am looking at the game as a single entity and not as a series of chapters in an epic tale... only time and Ubisoft can tell if that will work, but I'm willing to wait.
